About Me

A little bit about me…Joe Goldberg

I was selected by Witney Labour Party as their Parliamentary Candidate in November 2008, on the promise that I would take the fight to Cameron in his own backyard. Below you can find a little about me, my background, and the record on which I stand.

I am a Councillor in Haringey, after being elected in a hard fought by-election in January 2009 and was quickly promoted to Chief Whip of the Labour Group. This has offered me the opportunity and the privilege to get stuck in to casework, to help people out where I can, and campaign on the kind of issues that make a difference for the community – be it the environment, anti-social behaviour, planning,  the 2018 World Cup bid and the campaign to stop lap dancing clubs opening in the borough.

I have served as governor on two schools, one of which I still serve on, which was the most improved in London last year.

Having been raised in Guildford, Surrey, I know how Tories let down people in their own strongholds as much as they do in Labour. I remember the devastation their policies and their decisions visited on the friends’ families  I went to school with.

I first got involved in politics through the anti-racism movement, while I was still at school. It was then I realised and developed my values – and realised that a better society can only be achieved when we act in the common interest – or in the words of John F Kennedy – we seek to ‘raise all boats’.

I have a degree in Sociology from Bristol University, where I was elected to the student council as a Labour Party candidate, after busking outside the student union for votes. Before University I was a youth worker in North London, and taught English to children in disadvantaged areas on the Lebanon border.

My early political career saw me rise through the Labour Party student movement, from an NUS Area Convenor, to an NUS National Executive Member and then finally to National Chair of Labour Students. From there I went on to be  political assistant to Minister of State for Scotland, and fellow Co-op member, George Foulkes (now Lord Foulkes), which I combined with achieving a Masters in Public Policy from Edinburgh University.

Since graduating from Edinburgh, I’ve  been in industry, working for one of the world’s leading Confectionery manufacturers, starting out in a factory and finishing up as Brand Manager.  I now work for a brand consultancy where I develop marketing strategies for some of the world’s largest corporations.

I was married last year to my partner of 10 years, in Glasgow Scotland.
